National Geographic Bulgaria awarded for Best Edit

The magazine National Geographic Bulgaria received the award Best Edit by the international editor’s office of NG for the article “Be like the Balkans (guests of the Karakachans)”.

This award is high praise for the Bulgarian magazine – it’s given to the best original articles, published in the localized issues of National Geographic. Best Edit is a recognition for the excellent work of the local magazine and a means to spread the best articles and photos from the local issue to issues all over the world.

The article concerns the mysterious identity and the unique fate of the ethnicity called “Karakachans”. Numerous researchers place them as heirs of the original population of the Balkans, which precedes Thracian and Greek populations.

Known as “the last nomads of Europe”, the karakachans are convinced that they once had a settlement and were among the last defenders of Constantinople. The article in National Geographic was written by Liubomir Kiumiurdjiev and the photographs were taken by Ivo Dachev.
