Independence Day celebrations began

Early this morning started the nationwide celebrations on occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bulgaria’s Independence proclamation. As usual, they began at the country’s old capital Veliko Tarnovo with a Holly liturgy in the temple of Asen Dynasty. Later the President Georgi Parvanov, the Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and the parliamentary speaker Geori Pirinski joined.

The procession headed from the historical hill of Tsarevets after the hoisting of the national flag.

During the ceremony, Rumen Rashev, Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, made an official statement to the nation. Later a memorial plate made of black marble was unveiled. It has the historical data of the Independence proclamation – September 22 1908, graved on it.
