The rock formations near Belogradchik can be turned into an European geopark

It is very possible to give the rock formations near Belogradchik the status of an European geopark, said the representative of the municipality of Belogradchik Georgi Gruev.

The municipality of Belogradchik and a group of university students are preparing the necessary documents for the status change. Part of the needed documentation was sent to UNESCO last summer.

The UNESCO commission demanded additional information.

A geopark is a territory that features one or more objects of geological, archaeological, ecological or cultural worth. An international network of geoparks has also been created to oversee the safety of similar places.
