Thousands visited the Bachkovo Monastery for the Assumption of Mary

During the Assumption of Mary, the village Bachkovo is visited by numerous people from all parts of Bulgaria with “Bacho” in their names. Numerous citizens from Plovdiv and other guest also visit the village.

They all visit the monastery “Virgin Mary”, one of the oldest monasteries on the Balkans.

This year, thousands visited the monastery for the occasion. The traffic between Plovdiv and Bachkovo was very heavy, with nearly three hours of traveling in each direction.

Over the last few years, Bachkovo did much for tourism, with 140 beds for tourists in private homes around the village. Bachkovo has a little over 300 permanent residents. At the moment, there are at least 700 – 800 people visiting their relatives and another thousand visitors.
