After two years of work of politicians and experts and the six months long debates in the parliament, the law for cultural heritage was finally approved last Thursday. The deputees approved all contested texts of the law on the second reading.

Supporters of the law noted yet again that the people opposing the law are mostly the powerful collectors with large reserve of antiquities. For example, the collector Dimitar Ivanov – chief in the now defunct National security service – said that he wil seek all means possible to divert the law once again.

Despite the official promises of the three parliamentary parties of the majority, many deputees from the socialist party BSP refused to vote. Only twenty socialists remained in the voting hall. Thus the regulations were approved with the votes of about a hundred deputees. The opposition also supported the law.
