The project for the “open air” mall “Strand” in Bourgas – first of it’s kind in Bulgaria – was approved by the municipality of Bourgas. The project belongs to GMW Architects.

According to the preliminary reports, the mall should open in November 2010, says Mariella Ostend – investment director of ZBS EOOD, the investors of the project. Construction of the building will begin very soon, during the summer.

The mild seaside climate of Bourgas reinforced the idea of the company to place the trade center around three pedestrian zones, simulating the atmosphere of a merchant square.

This type of trade centers are much more effective, because they consume less electricity than the traditional “closed” malls. Another significant plus is their focus on lifestyle – a large part of the mall is dedicated to entertainment services.

The pedestrian alleys will allow the citizens of Bourgas to enjoy the sun and breeze. Shelters will be constructed to keep customers safe from both rain and the summer heat.

The new concept has already attracted the attention of a large number of chain stores and received recognition from the international expo MAPIK in Cannes, France.
