The opening of the park of the Sofia airport was the final phase of the project for reconstruction and development of the airport of the capital. The park spreads over 365 decares and was officially opened by the minister of transport Petar Mutafchiev.

“Previously, these lands were barren”, said Angel Tuleshkov, director of the department “Development, reconstruction and support of the Sofia airport”.

Currently, the park features 150 decares of green fields, an amphitheatre, an observation tower, an alley for pedestrians and an artificial lake.

“The place is unique, because it’s very close to the dike of the river Iskar”, explained Angel Tuleshkov. A water station supports the level of the lake at all times.

Another water station is provided especially for the watering of the park. The future last stop of the subway will be right at the entrance of the park.

The urbanization of this territory was done according to the requirements of both the European commission and the OBOC report of the airport. The maintenance of the park will be given to an interested company after a bidding for the commission. The citizen access to the park will be free, but controlled. A wall will be constructed soon to separate the park.

“The airport management and the Ministry of transport are currently discussing ideas for the contracts with third-party companies that will provide various attractions in the zone – culture events, concerts, etc.,” explained the minister Petar Mutafchiev.
